Amanitin ELISA: A Crucial Research Tool for Understanding Deadly Mushroom Poisoning

The consumption of wild mushrooms, may lead to perilous consequences, particularly when it involves Amanitin-containing species. Amanitins are a group of highly toxic cyclic peptides found in several mushroom species, most notably the Amanita phalloides, commonly known as the Death Cap mushroom. Ingesting even a small quantity of Amanitin can lead to severe liver and kidney damage, often culminating in fatality.

The Amanita phalloides syndrome is estimated to be responsible for 95% of fatal cases of mushroom poisoning throughout the world. Therefore, this intoxication should be assessed when studying all samples from subjects suspected of mushroom poisoning.

Amatoxins are detected in urine samples within 6 to 60 hours after ingestion. The BÜHLMANN Amanitin ELISA detects alpha-Amanitin (100%) and gamma-Amanitin (90%) in urine.
