NGAL – new biomarker for acute kidney injury

• About 10% of hospital patients are at risk of developing renal failure and about 5% actually develop this dangerous condition

• NGAL begins to rise within an hour of acute kidney injury, whereas current diagnostic methods only detect the consequences of damage well after the event

• Acute kidney injury can lead to a serious episode of acute renal failure if appropriate management is not initiated at a very early stage

• The earlier kidney injury is detected, the greater the chance of it not leading to serious renal failure
