Parkinson Disease (PD) is a common chronic, neurodegenerative disorder. Until today there is a lack of biological markers and/or surrogate endpoints to demonstrate clinical efficacy of new treatments. Generally, 1-MeTIQ in the brain is a putative candidate of the small-molecular marker for parkinsonism and aging, and it can be presumed that 1-MeTIQ plays a role in protecting the brain from parkinsonism and aging process.

There is currently no definitive diagnostic test for PD, and thus for the clinician there is hope that a biomarker will help diagnose symptomatic and presymptomatic disease or provide surrogate endpoints to demonstrate clinical efficacy of new treatments, such as neuroprotective therapies, and help stratify this heterogenous disease.

1-MeTIQ:
1-Methyl-1,2,3,4-Tetrahydroisoquinoline (and its demethylated form TIQ) were isolated from mouse, rat and human brain. 1-MeTIQ is suggested to be a candidate as an endogenous or environmental factor inducing PD.

The concentration of 1-MeTIQ is confirmed to be reduced in patients with idiopathic PD as well as in the parkinsonian mouse model and the concentration of 1-MeTIQ decreases with aging.
