The first commercially available Vasopressin RIA
Vasopressin
Anti-diuretic hormone (ADH), or [Arg8]-Vasopressin (AVP), is a peptide hormone produced by the hypothalamus and stored in the posterior part of pituitary gland. ADH acts on kidneys, concentrating urine by promoting the re-absorption of water from the cortical collecting duct.
Decreased ADH release leads to diabetes insipidus, a condition featuring hypernatremia (increased blood sodium content), pollyuria (excess urine production) and thirst.
Raised ADH levels (Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone or SIADH), and the resulting hyponatremia, occurs in diseases of the brain and lung. In the perioperative period, the effects of surgical stress and some commonly used medications (e.g. opiates, syntocinon, anti-emetics) lead to a similar state of excess ADH secretion. This may cause mild hyponatremia for several days.
Vasopressin direct RIA
Role in disease:
• Decreased ADH leads to diabetes insipidus, a condition featuring hypernatremia (increased blood sodium content), polyuria (excess urine production) and thirst.
• Raised ADH (syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone, SIADH) and resultant hyponatremia occurs in brain diseases and conditions of the lungs. In the peri-operative period, the effects of surgical stress and some commonly used medications lead to a similar state of excess ADH secretion. This may cause mild hyponatremia for several days.
