Further Products

The “further” products group a broad range of products and cover disciplines such as emergency diagnostics, electrolyte- and waterbalance, Hypertension/Endocrinology, Obesity, Cardiovascular, Vitamin status, etc. All such products are based on RIA or ELISA technology. Many of them were at the time first and unique on the market and some still are. Most of them have transitioned from basic research to clinical routine applications, where they are used today.

Amanitin intoxications
The amanita spec is a mushroom which is highly toxic. Often the mushroom is confused with other (non-lethal) mushrooms. The Amanitin phalloides syndrome is estimated to be responsible for 95% of fatal cases of mushroom poisonings throughout the world. Even a small piece of this mushroom may cause death. Intoxications with Amanitin have been reported to be lethal in up to 25% of the cases and the mortality rate in children under 10 years of age is above 50%. An Amanitin phalloides intoxication should be ruled out in all patients presenting gastro-intestinal symptoms after a mushroom ingestion. BÜHLMANN provides the one and only commercial kit for that purpose, as rapid, highly reliable, quantitative Amanitin ELISA.

Electrolyte- / Water balance
Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH, Vasopressin) is available in two versions: as a direct (i e no extraction) method or with extraction. BÜHLMANN vasopressin assays are highly sensitive RIAs to quantitatively determine the vasopressin status. Whereas ADH-direct is mainly used in clinical investigations, the classic vasopressin RIA (with extraction) is rather a research assay. The assay is also used in a number of rodent animal models. The calibrators are referenced against WHO-standard 77/501.

Obesity / Diabetes / Cardiology / Nutrition
A multimeric Adiponectin ELISAwith which to efficiently measure HMW, MMW, LMW and total Adiponectin all at the same time on one ELISA plate. Recent literature suggests HMW Adiponectin to better correlate with type II diabetes pathogenesis as compared to total Adiponectin alone.
The multimeric Adiponectin ELISA is offered today as a RUO product. However, a CE-marked assay is planned to be launched in 2009 to support growing requests for IVD applications.

Vitamin / Nutrition
Plasma vitamin B6 levels are high in infants and decrease with age. Deficiency usually occurs in association with other nutrient deficiencies. The dependence upon exogenous sources to maintain adequate levels of Vitamin B6 in the body makes it clinically desirable to measure pyridoxal 5'-phosphate in plasma in a simple and efficient way as an indicator for the Vitamin B6 status.

Angiotensin II
The determination of Angiotensin II titers is of interst in issues such as diagnosis of an essential hypertension, treatment with angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE) or angiotensin receptor antagonists and lipid peroxidation. The Calibrators are calibrated against WHO reference preparation MRC70/302. The assay continues to be used both in a number of research projects in animal models and clinical trials.
